Films: The Brothers Grimm (2005)

Summary: Fairy tales are...most of the time cutesy revisions of some positively nasty tales that made damn sure that the children behave themselves. But now, the very worst of children's story fare is out and about, and only an estranged pair of twins can stop it.

History: Long ago, a wickedly vain queen wished for immortality, but realized too late that she would live forever, but her looks would deteriorate over time. In order to stop this, she put all of her good looks into an eternal mirror, and now seeks out twelve children to capture and take the youth from. To do this, she has enslaved several individuals with an amulet, including a werewolf woodsman, and is using her magic to create monsters to also do the kidnapping. Only the brothers Grimm can hope to stop her, if they can get over each other’s differences first.

Notable Kills: One of the trees rams a root rather painfully through a victim, skewering him like a kebab.

Final Fate: At first, it seems like the Queen's plan is a success, with her restoring her youth via all twelve sacrifices. However, the youngest Grimm shatters the mirror, destroying her good looks and causing her to shatter into oblivion. The Woodsman, having been foolishly freed from the Queen's spell by her, finishes the job by launching out of the window to smash the final piece. However, the queen lives...forever imprisoned in the shards.

Powers/Abilities: The Queen has managed to stay alive by putting all of her youth into a mirror, and will live forever is she has absorbed enough youth from others. She can also use an amulet to stab into people to make them fall in love with her and serve her, as well as create monsters such as the web-spewing and jaw-unhinging Spider-Horse, and the mud-absorbing Gingerbread Man.

Weakness: If the mirror is destroyed, so is the queen. Her forces can be taken out by conventional means.

Scariness Factor: 3.5-The CGI isn't particularly good, especially for the Woodsman and the Gingerbread Man, but sometimes, it's the idea that's scary. The Spider-Horse in particular is a concept made of nightmare fuel. But the Queen in particular is a frightful sight as an overaged hag, and has the horrible disposition to boot!

Trivia: -This film was infamously hard to make due to director Terry Gilliam not only facing conflicts with the Weinstein brothers, but also being kind of a dick to Lena Headey due to her replacing the actress she wanted. Then again, the execs used her because the original actress was apparently too chubby for the role. Wankers!

-The actual Brothers Grimm were named Jacob and Wilhelm, and were acclaimed writers and philosophers from 19th century Germany. They are responsible for many of our modern fairy tales, albeit they have been altered over time to mitigate the more...well, grim aspects of the originals.
